Oud Perfume: Everything You Need to Know

7 min read Aug 15, 2025
Oud (also spelled oudh or aoud) is one of the world's most expensive and sought-after fragrance ingredients. Derived from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees, oud has been treasured in the Middle East for thousands of years. Today, it's experiencing a global renaissance as Western perfume houses discover what Arabian perfumers have known for centuries.

What is Oud?

When Aquilaria trees become infected with a specific type of mold, they produce a dark, aromatic resin as a defense mechanism. This resin-saturated wood is oud. The process is rare and unpredictable — only about 2% of Aquilaria trees produce oud naturally, which contributes to its incredible value. High-quality oud can cost more per gram than gold.

Types of Oud in Perfumery

Hindi Oud — From India. Deep, animalic, and intensely woody. The most traditional choice in Gulf perfumery.

Cambodian Oud — Sweeter and more fruity than Hindi. Often described as having a honey-like quality.

Indonesian Oud — Earthier and smokier. Often used as a base in layered compositions.

Synthetic Oud — Lab-created molecules that replicate oud's character. More sustainable and consistent, used in most modern perfumery.

How to Wear Oud

Oud is powerful — a little goes a long way. Apply to pulse points sparingly. In the UAE climate, oud projects even more than in cooler regions, so adjust accordingly. For beginners, start with oud-based perfumes that blend oud with familiar notes like rose, vanilla, or sandalwood. As your palate develops, you can explore pure oud oils.

Oud at Muzhera

Our Al Ameer showcases oud in its most refined form — blended with leather, warm spices, and bergamot to create a modern interpretation of this ancient ingredient. It's designed to be approachable while honoring the depth and complexity that makes oud so special.
