In every Emirati home, the scent of Dukhoon (Arabic incense) is as essential as the welcoming coffee and dates offered to guests. This ancient tradition, passed down through generations, transforms ordinary moments into sensory experiences that connect the present to a rich cultural heritage.
What is Dukhoon?
Dukhoon literally means "smoke" in Arabic. It refers to the practice of burning fragrant wood chips, resins, and blended incense on charcoal. Unlike stick incense common in East Asia, Arabian Dukhoon is typically loose — a blend of oud wood, sandalwood, musk, amber, rose, and other aromatic ingredients pressed or mixed into chips or bakhoor.
How to Use Dukhoon
Step 1: Light a charcoal disc and place it in a mabkhara (incense burner). Wait until the charcoal is fully lit and glowing.
Step 2: Place a small piece of Dukhoon on the charcoal. Don't use too much — one or two pieces are enough.
Step 3: For clothes, hold garments over the rising smoke, allowing the fragrance to permeate the fabric. For rooms, carry the mabkhara through each room.
Step 4: For the traditional "tadkheen" (personal incense bath), waft the smoke around your body and hair.
